Breast+Cancer+Walk%3A+How+Did+it+Go%3F

Sunday, October 22th, WP attended the annual breast cancer walk. Students and staff gathered in Coney Island to show support to people battling breast cancer.

The walk was about three miles. It was one and a half miles both ways.

The students wore WP breast cancer awareness shirts during the walk.

What happened during the walk?

According to Ms. Wilen, a teacher at WP who helped organize the walk, the walk went well.

“About nine students and a couple of teachers met up at WP and then went to Coney Island where they met up with a few more teachers for the walk,” Ms. Wilen said.

She added, “they stopped at Nathan’s Hot dogs and an old candy shop. Students were able to buy breast cancer awareness merch.”

According to Brianna, a WP student, “the walk was about two to two and a half hours, and we walked the boardwalk of Coney Island.”

“There were about 1,000 people there from different schools and companies,” she went on to say.” All money raised will be donated to the Making Strides of Brooklyn.¨

According to acsevents.org, which is the website for informing people about upcoming breast cancer events, the money will be used to help fund groundbreaking breast cancer research.

Information about Breast Cancer

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, “breast cancer occurs nearly 100 times more often in women than in men.”

Factors that can be changed to reduce risk can include lack of physical activity, being overweight or obese, and frequent consumption of alcohol.

However, 60-70% of people with breast cancer have no connection to these risk factors at all.

Breast cancer is not contagious.
